Wii gets DVD Upgrade - fanboys groan

According to a press release from Sonic Solutions, posted by Cubed3, as of late 2007 customers will be able to purchase a Wii with DVD playback capabilities. I’m a bit surprised Nintendo are doing this, they did the same thing with the GameCube but as far as I’m aware it didn’t sell so well. When the specs for the Wii were first released they said it had DVD playback but since then have removed it, so why now are they doing a special ‘Wii Lite’ version with it in?
I was speaking with Craig about this before and we both came to the conclusion that a DVD player really isn’t necessary in the Wii, the GameCube was okay without it and back then, DVD was a lot rarer than it is now. We both realized that put together, we own around 12 things that can play DVDs. So who need more?

I think this is a rather ridiculous move, as you stated, just who needs an additional DVD player these days? As we’ve already seen having two different versions of the same console can also easily confuse unwitting consumers, something Nintendo was adamant it didn’t want to do…
