I don’t mean to sound dramatic but, today was a great day for video games in the UK. The release of Nintendo Wii has far exceeded the expectations of many, with even the most casual Sony fan-boys becoming interested in this new machine. I set out on my way to GAME this morning at 7AM, it was dark, cold and rainy.. great. We arrived at GAME at half past 7 and were let in by a member of staff who made sure we had a relevant preorder. As we joined the back of the queue, slowly we crawled to the front and purchased the Wii. Due to work commitments and my parents wishes however, I won’t actually get to play the machine till Christmas day (its a present from Santa that I have to buy and get reimbursed for :P) so I can’t actually vouch for how good it is at the moment.

What I can say though is that there were a mass amount of people purchasing the console, afterwards there were a large majority of people strolling around town with bags full of Wii goodies. Heather and I went to McDonalds (the only place open in the mornings) to get some orange juice. There was a nice old lady who came in and commented on how we were crazy enough to get the thing so early as well. I spoke to her for a while and she told me she was buying the console for her son who was actually giving it to his little sister for Christmas.

I just spoke to some friends who got the Wii today, I really can’t wait for Christmas. Only 17 days… maybe I should do another countdown with TV channel logos?

EDIT: Just read over at Kotaku, the Wii had sold over 50,000 copies by lunchtime today
