Virtual Console ‘Classic’ titles coming soon

Posted by Kerri on January 9th, 2007

1_314.jpgNintendo have updated their European site informing budding gamers of some of the games coming to their virtual console service within the next few months. Some of the biggest Nintendo titles are starting to show up on the system and that can only be a good thing. There have been mixed opinions on the virtual console service since it started however, mostly the price point of titles is putting some people off. The prices for some of these games seem a little high as they are priced by format rather than monetary worth. In the update Nintendo have stated that

Wii points required for titles available in 2007 may vary.

Hopefully this will be a good thing and mean that some games will be cheaper depending on demand. An example would be the game Altered Beast for the Mega Drive. The game was packaged in free with the original system when it was first released whereas now, the price to download the title on the Wii is 800 points (which is £6/$8 in real money). This is obviously creating a small fuss around the internets as this is quite a lot to pay for a title that was free all those years ago. I have a feeling that games will be priced differently depending on situations like this in future rather than pricing all games for one system at the same price.

As I posted last night, Sega are bringing some of there classic games including Streets of Rage, Bio-Hazard Battle and Comix Zone later on this quarter. Nintendo are promising to bring some of their biggest games as well including The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Street Fighter 2, Mario Kart 64 and Super Mario World. Hopefully their statement on varying games prices doesn’t mean that customers will be required to pay a premium for these upcoming games due to their ‘legendary’ status. Considering there are at least 2 versions of Ocarina of Time available for Gamecube, surely they can’t charge too much for this game?

The post also describes more about the stars systems involvement with Wii points. In the very near future, Star points obtained from registering select Nintendo game codes on their site will be able to be used to buy points for the Wii shop which can be put towards Virtual Console games or the upcoming Internet Channel (a demo of which is already available on the shop for free). Hopefully Nintendo are changing their system for the better to fulfil the needs of their customer base. People will find it hard to pay a large amount for old games considering that you can play them for pretty much free illegally - the type of thing that Nintendo is trying to prevent by having the Virtual Console in place.
