Tomb Raider Anniversary Edition - First Impressions

a_med_1-25169_tombraideranniv.jpgEurogamer recently had the chance to test the incoming Tomb Raider ’sort-of-remake’ Anniversary Edition due out later this year.

“The level is characterised by a marked attempt to return to the sense of archaeological isolation that distinguished the first game in the series; the sense that this is a virgin territory, untainted by human presence for thousands of years. Consequently, most of Lara’s enemies are now animals, and Crystal Dynamics has put a lot of effort into honing the AI till their behaviour is believable. Now wolves hunt and attack in pack formations, for example, and bats bears, and dinosaurs all behave in convincing ways. They also sound convincing, and the audio in general contributes to this sense of isolation, with the occasional wolf-howl echoing round the cavern, and antique ropes creaking loudly as Lara swings on them.”

It all sounds exciting, I’m looking forward to playing this game a lot. The original Tomb Raider released in 1996 launched Lara Croft as a household name and created video gaming’s first major public exposure (even appearing on major magazine covers). It will be interesting to see how the final product turns out. Last years Tomb Raider Legend was good fun but sadly it suffered from being a tad too short. It also had the feeling that you were constantly being watched over by a parent attempting to help you out. I have a feeling that for this years Anniversary Edition will run a lot smoother as the engine has already been made and the developers know it inside out. Hopefully this should lead to a much longer game, much like its source material.

Legend did feel way too short. I’m looking forward to this anniversary edition.

I was never a fan of Tomb Radier, the clunky controls always frustrated me. I have not played legends but I heard that Crystal Dynamics fixed the controls, which makes me interested in playing legends and this new one. This one still sounds like a quick cash in to me though. I guess we’ll see soon enough

Kate: Legend was good but way too short. You could finish it in the amount of time it took to get 1/3rd the way through the first Tomb Raider.
It was good fun though and was constantly a action filled game throughout. It didn’t have boring sections where you were stuck and couldn’t go any further like the original Core games.

Anthony: Your probably right about the cash in. It’d probably be better if they could just make a sequel to Legend.
