Retail PS3 Preorder level - ‘meh’
Posted by Kerri on February 13th, 2007
Seeing as the launch of Sony’s PLAYSTATION 3 is rather imminent, pre-orders and bullshitting are high on the list of things to talk about at the moment - especially for the many UK retailers. This is clearly a big event for the British games industry, so it’s hardly good news when Charles Arthur (writer for the Guardian’s Gameblog) reports that retailers are hardly enjoying huge interest for the £425 behemoth.
So what sort of ratio of demand was there between the PS3, Wii and Xbox 360? Demand for the Wii was more than 10x greater than for the PS3, he said, and had been about 5x that of the Xbox. And he personally didn’t think any of the PS3 launch games were worth the bother. “Sony has been promising this for two years and people have just got bored with it,” he suggested.
I can kinda agree with him about the games, the only one I’m interested in is Motorstorm, but that’s hardly worth the hefty price tag (Gaijin, remember we’ve only got the most expensive 60GB option over here). It doesn’t really make much sense, the Playstation pretty much is video games in this country and a terribly huge brand. It is probably quite harsh to point out that the heavy price tag is going to kick them in the ass - at least until the end of March.

I think Sony has been the real gambler this gen, rather than Nintendo. A blind person could see how that price would impede any sell-through record breaking by the PS3. It’s a hype-killer. 2007 will be a year of everyone trying to knock Sony and point out their flaws/predict doom while Sony sits back and waits for the true beginning of the war in 2008.
That’ll be interesting. All systems in all territories will finally have a good enough standing by then to make comparisons.

True, Wii and PS3 are both too lacking in quality games at the moment to judge how they stand in the greater picture.
Lets wait and see what happens towards the end of this fiscal year.
