A Rare chance for old games on Virtual Console?

Play-Nintendo recently stumbled across a recently updated Q&A session by Rare, the creators of such classic Nintendo games such as Goldeneye, the Donkey Kong series, Banjo-Kazooie and Perfect Dark. The Q&A brings light to the situation that fans of the companies games have been speculating about since last year.
The situation became apparent because Rare were bought out by Microsoft for $377 million USD, it was at this time that it was clear that Rare would probably not be working with Nintendo again. When the Virtual Console was born and introduced to the public eye at last years E3, it wasn’t long until gaming fans began to wonder whether or not Rare’s classics would appear on the system. In March 2006, Matt Casamassina of IGN’s Wii section announced that the VC would be ‘rareless’ and would not feature any games from Rare’s back catalogue
With the updating of Rare’s Q&A page, Play-Nintendo has spotted that the company are seemingly neither here nor there on the situation.
The only Rare-developed title on Virtual Console right now is the original Donkey Kong Country, and unofficially there’s a strong likelihood that its sequels will follow. But the Donkey Kong series of games is a Nintendo-owned franchise starring an established Nintendo character, whereas something like Banjo isn’t (and even Diddy Kong Racing is less clear-cut), so it’s nowhere near as easy to call. Especially when you also consider the existence of Xbox Live Arcade. So right now, the best answer we can offer (for either download service) is “it’s possible”.
So with that, its clear to see that either Rare are sitting on the fence either way on if their old games will appear on any of the retro-gaming services. Either that or they are just waiting for an official announcement to be made. Either way, its nice to see that the idea of playing Perfect Dark again isn’t completely out of the picture.
