8bit music #1 - The Depreciation Guild
Posted by Jephso on April 24th, 2007
Based in Brooklyn, The Depreciation Guild are a shoegaze rock duo, utilising the sound chip of the Nintendo Entertainment System, the 2A03. Part instrumental, part lyric driven, the band combine fuzzy guitars over electronic drums and bass to create an indulgent, smooth interpretation of the 8-bit sound. The band’s sometimes sparse arrangements create an unique, overwhelming sound scape, unlike anything else out there currently. Members of the seminal New York 8-bit music scene, TDP released their Nautilus EP last year through the 8bitpeoples net label. Towards the end of 2006 the band played at the Blip Festival, and live video from the event as well as all 4 of their released tracks can be seen/heard over at their MySpace page. In Her Gentle Jaws, the band’s first full length CD release, should be out sometime in the near future. These guys should be bigger than they are right now - I guess shoegaze has had its day - but keep an eye on TDP, as their next release is eagerly anticipated.
