It certainly didn't have the incredible atmosphere that Half Life 2 had right from the very moment you click 'new game'. Still, Halo 3 will do immensly well at retail and you can bet that the fanboys will feel a sort of anticlimax ;) I’ve played a couple of hours of the first Halo but I’m not sure if it was enough to understand what all the big fuss is about.
