Making Tomb Raider more like Tomb Raider - Anniversary Wii Edition
Posted by Kerri on August 17th, 2007
After todays news that Eidos and Crystal Dynamics are hard at work on the next entry in the rejuvenated Tomb Raider series, a video of Tomb Raider Anniversary on the Wii has been released.
For once in the series’ life, it actually wowed me at its use of modern technology. Crystal Dynamics have taken the decade-old concept of running, opening traps and ’shooting-the -crap-out-of-things’ and added an element that should have been included into Tomb Raider at the start - tomb raiding.
By harnessing the power of the Wii remote, players of the game will now be able to excavate tombs and uncover artifacts like never before in a video game. I think I speak for the majority of gamers when I say that upon hearing of a Wii version, I was just expecting the exact same game with some minor ‘point-and-click’ gun shooting action thrown in for the ‘multi-platform bucks’. What I didn’t expect was for the game to turn into a brand new selling point for the franchise. Keep reading for the video and further impressions.
What the video shows is the more ‘hands-on’ angle for the series where you yourself will be opening up tombs, solving puzzles and discovering artifacts with unique motions using the Wii remote. If Crystal Dynamics can extend the use of this new system throughout the entire game and make it fit into the context of the already fantastic remake, Eidos may be able to tap into the massive ‘casual-gamer’ audience and make some new fans as well as please the old enough into buying the game all over again (for the third time!).

Fingers crossed that they dont sell out the basics and keep the main gameplay control easy to pick up.

True, it is still quite possible that Crystal Dynamics could make this type of gameplay feel quite tacked on if not done correctly.
From what I’ve seen in this video though, it looks as if there are a few new gameplay locations on the Wii version compared to the PC one I played - but perhaps my memory is just poor.
