PS3 ‘Home’ and ‘LittleBigPlanet’ announced

Whoever said that GDC07 wasn’t going to be eventful?
In Phil Harrison’s keynote speech today the new ‘Home’ system for the PS3 was announced. By the looks of this video uploaded on Game Trailers it seems to be an exciting cross between Habbo Hotel and Second Life. The system itself gives you an avatar, which is customisable just like a character from said games but with the added bonus of being able to ‘download’ extras for your avatar and their home spaces. Whether or not these extras will cost money or not was not mentioned (I’ll bet you an enemy crab it will).
Sony’s new home system seems pretty fun as it allows you to connect with others and play around with various online titles such as ‘LittleBigPlanet‘ which was also announced at today’s keynote. The game smacks of cuteness and looks to be tremendous fun, whether or not both of these services are worth the £425 price point is debatable.
Clearly the PS3′s list of supporting developers is growing all the time, even though it’s not out yet. As time goes on and more and more quirky games and services are introduced like this, it will be hard to not be at least attracted to one thing that mega expensive behemoth has to offer. With the ‘Home’ service, Sony seems to be aiming the PS3 towards the people out there that play Second Life and other social MMOs and are willing to pay extra cash for extra parts in the game. Whether or not the free service will turn into a chav-infested war zone is a story we’ll keep for another day.
