Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Blue Rescue Team

This review was original written by Chris who used to write for 8bit Hero!

I found out yesterday that today I would have to travel from Portslade all the way to Godalming (which is in Surrey) to teach karate at Charterhouse College…a total of 6 hours round journey! So i thought to myself “what a great opportunity to buy a new game!” Shortly after having this great thought I went out and bought the new Pokémon game Mystery Dungeon. For anybody who isn’t aware of this game the story line is that your character is in fact a human that has been turned into a pokemon for some reason that i haven’t found out yet. Your character forms a “Pokemon Rescue Team” in which you and your partner (whom you choose at the beginning) go around trying to help other pokemon out. In order to make your team stronger you need to go around and complete more and more missions and impress more pokemon who will then request to join your rescue team. The format of the game is totally different from all the other games. Whereas in the original titles you find pokemon by walking through long grass, on this one they are just walking around all over the place (but you cannot catch then). For every step that you take in any direction the surrounding pokemon will also move one step, once you get within one space of each other you can attack. To do so you can either do your standard Tackle attack by pressing A or you can press B and bring up a list of 4 options to choose from. Once you defeat your enemy they will either disappear or they will ask to join you. Personally I really like this game, but i can imagine that it would get boring a lot quicker than the original games because once you complete it that’s it, whereas with the older ones you would try searching for more pokemon to catch; however, its still as addictive as all the other games to date. So far I’ve played the game for about 10 hours and haven’t got bored or tired of it yet and none of the missions seem to have repeated which is a good sign. One negative however is that there are a lot of in-game movies that cannot be exited which makes it really irritating if you die shortly after the movie without being able to save it as you have to watch the whole thing all over again (and some of them aren’t all that short). All in all though, a very good game!
